Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy in Bogotá
Learn about the procedure, questions to discuss before booking and the importance of an individual assessment.

What can it examine?
Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy uses a flexible camera to examine the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Depending on the findings and medical indication, biopsies and certain interventions may be performed.
Before the procedure
Tell the team about medical conditions, allergies, medicines and previous procedures. Preparation, fasting and medication adjustments must be individualized. Do not stop medicines on your own. Confirm whether sedation and an accompanying adult will be needed.
Results and follow-up
The endoscopy report describes the findings. If biopsies are taken, the later pathology report is interpreted together with symptoms and medical history. Ask how reports will be delivered and when follow-up is needed.
Frequently asked questions
Does a biopsy mean I have cancer?
No. Biopsies also help investigate inflammation and other changes. Their meaning depends on the tissue analysis and clinical context.
Is endoscopy the same as colonoscopy?
No. Upper endoscopy examines the upper digestive tract; colonoscopy examines the colon and rectum.
