Colonoscopy: screening, results and follow-up
Understanding why the examination is needed helps explain what comes next.
Diagnosis and screening are different
A diagnostic examination investigates symptoms or findings. Screening aims to detect lesions in people who may have no symptoms. Family history, age and previous studies influence the strategy discussed during the consultation.
Keep all your results
The procedure report and pathology results provide different information. If tissue is collected, confirm when the result will be available and who will explain it. The word polyp does not automatically mean cancer.
Follow-up is individual
There is no single repeat interval that applies to everyone. Findings, bowel preparation and medical history help determine follow-up. Consult if new concerns arise even if the next examination is not yet due.
