PATIENT EDUCATION
Preparing for your first gastroenterology visit
Organize the information that will help you make the most of your visit.
Your history in a few notes
Write down your main concerns, when they started and how they have changed. Include previous visits and treatments you have tried, with their names and results. You do not need to arrive with a diagnosis: describing your experience is a good starting point.
Useful documents
Gather available endoscopy, colonoscopy, biopsy, laboratory and imaging reports. Bring your medicine and supplement list, allergies, previous operations and relevant family history. Complete reports are more useful than remembering whether a result was normal.
Before you leave
Ask about the next step, the purpose of any proposed test, how results will be delivered and when to return. Confirm the location and appointment arrangements through the contact channels. Seek urgent care for vomiting blood, black stools with feeling unwell, or bleeding accompanied by fainting.
