Questions to ask before an endoscopy

A conversation beforehand helps you understand the procedure and organize your appointment day.

Clarify the purpose

Ask which part of the digestive tract will be examined, what the test aims to clarify and whether biopsies may be taken. The procedure should relate to your individual situation; the same symptom does not mean everyone needs the same test.

Organize your preparation

Confirm fasting instructions, which medicines to report and whether an accompanying adult is required. Bring your referral and available previous studies. If an instruction is unclear, contact the team beforehand rather than following someone else’s preparation.

Ask about follow-up

Clarify how you will receive the report and, if biopsies are taken, pathology results. Ask about expected discomfort and when to seek medical attention. Keep the discharge instructions and contact details provided by the team.
